Cellar Keeper Skill Build Order
Which of the seven upgradeable skills to level first — and which can wait.
Skills are the main progression lever in Cozy Mode. Speedrun Mode disables them entirely, and Hardcore Mode inherits whatever comfort you have from muscle memory rather than upgrades. In Cozy play, you earn skill points by completing shelves, with smaller shelves paying out first — a design nudge that lets you unlock tools early if you clear manageable racks before tackling cathedral walls of bottles.
Cellar Keeper ships seven skills, each upgradeable five times: Spot Matches, Batch Grab, Quick Order, Target Hint, Auto Place, Sprint, and Jump. This guide gives a practical priority list for spending those points across a 2,448-bottle run, with cross-links to deep dives on individual abilities.
How you earn and spend skill points
Every completed shelf deposits points into your Cozy Mode pool. Because small shelves complete faster, new players should hunt bite-sized racks near spawn before marching into multi-tier cabinets that eat an hour without paying out. Pair that habit with the organizing loop in How to Organize Bottles so you are not finishing shelves inefficiently.
Once points appear, open the skill menu and invest deliberately. Respec rules depend on in-game UI — treat early points as permanent until you confirm otherwise, and follow the tier list below before experimenting with luxury upgrades.
Recommended priority order
Tier 1 — Core efficiency (level early)
- Batch Grab — Essential. Lets you scoop multiple bottles per action, multiplying every walk across the cellar. Read the full breakdown in Batch Grab.
- Spot Matches — Highlights valid bottles for your current objective, cutting label squint time in dark corners. See Spot Matches.
These two skills define how fast the midgame feels. Most players push Batch Grab to three or more before heavy spending elsewhere.
Tier 2 — Routing and quality of life
- Quick Order — Sorts your left-side carry list into a logical deposit sequence, reducing shelf claim mistakes when hands are full.
- Target Hint — Points toward cabinets or bottles relevant to active goals; strong when map symbols blur together in late-game wings.
- Sprint — Shortens transit between distant racks once batches grow beyond ten bottles per loop.
Upgrade Quick Order before Target Hint if you frequently carry mixed-brand loads. Upgrade Target Hint first if you already batch perfectly but get lost.
Tier 3 — Automation and mobility luxuries
- Auto Place — Automates placement when conditions are met. Wonderful late, but less impactful while you still learning shelf claims from Getting Started.
- Jump — Navigational convenience for vertical layouts; lowest priority unless a room clearly punishes foot traffic.

Sample point budgets by cellar phase
Early cellar (0–25% sorted) — Batch Grab levels 1–3, Spot Matches levels 1–2. Focus on learning labels; skills should reinforce habits, not replace map reading.
Mid cellar (25–70%) — Finish Batch Grab, max Spot Matches, add Quick Order and Sprint alternately. Begin Target Hint if you enter repeating wing layouts.
Late cellar (70–100%) — Auto Place for cleanup sweeps, remaining Sprint or Jump levels for stubborn rooms. Sync with How to Complete the Cellar pacing tips.
Adjust if you speedrun later — Cozy Mode vs Speedrun Mode explains why none of these upgrades carry over.
Cooldown refresh tip (optional)
Several skills operate on cooldowns. An optional community-known tip: quitting and relaunching the game refreshes cooldowns without rolling back bottle progress. Use it sparingly between wings if a long cooldown would otherwise stall a planned burst. It is not required for completion and does not replace good routing.
Skills versus achievements
Skill progress indirectly supports achievements like Peak Efficiency, No Shortcuts, and Master Organizer by reducing backtracking. Narrative payoff for restoring the cellar ties to How to Free the Keeper. Skills do not unlock story beats directly — order does.
When to stop investing
If a skill no longer changes your loop, bank points or switch categories. Batch Grab at max while you still walk empty-handed means you need better pickup discipline, not more levels. Likewise, max Auto Place cannot fix gray flashes from wrong wine types — revisit map symbols instead.
Return to the Guides Hub for organizing help or drill into individual pages when one ability feels opaque. Smart skill priority turns Cellar Keeper from a walking simulator into a satisfying flow state without spoiling the cozy atmosphere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best first skill in Cellar Keeper Cozy Mode?
Batch Grab is the top first pick because it accelerates multi-bottle pickup. Spot Matches is a close second for label filtering — see [Batch Grab](/skills/batch-grab/) and [Spot Matches](/skills/spot-matches/).
How many times can each skill be upgraded?
Each of the seven skills supports five upgrade levels in Cozy Mode. Speedrun Mode offers no upgrades at all.
Why should I complete small shelves first for skill points?
Smaller shelves finish faster and pay skill points sooner, letting you unlock Batch Grab and Spot Matches before tackling huge racks.
Does quitting the game reset skill cooldowns?
Yes — quitting and relaunching refreshes skill cooldowns as an optional tip. Bottle progress is preserved; use it between sorting bursts if you want.
