Cellar Keeper Cabinet Symbols
Every map icon points to a wine type — match the second label line.
The central map in Cellar Keeper is more than decoration. Each cabinet node displays a symbol representing a wine type, and that symbol is the routing key for every bottle you carry. Before you walk across the cellar with ten bottles in hand, match the second line on the label (wine type) to the symbol on the map. Get that pairing wrong and gray placement feedback waits at the cabinet — no matter how perfectly sorted your brands feel in the carry list.
This guide explains how to read symbols, avoid common mismatches, and integrate map icons with shelf rules from the Bottles hub. Pair it with Cellar Layout for physical paths between symbol clusters.
What cabinet symbols represent
Symbols encode wine type, not brand and not series number. The game assumes you will:
- Identify wine type on the label.
- Find the matching symbol on the map.
- Walk to that cabinet zone.
- Sort by brand onto shelves (first brand placed locks the shelf).
- Order by series number within the brand shelf if you pursue strict completion.
Steps four and five happen locally at the cabinet. The map solves step three only. If step one is wrong, no symbol will help.
How to read the central map
Open the map overlay from gameplay (binding depends on your input — see Keyboard and Mouse or Controller). Pan across nodes; each cabinet icon shows its wine type symbol. Zoom mentally into clusters: adjacent symbols often sit in the same wing, which helps batch walking even though you still place one wine type per delivery batch.
When multiple symbols look similar at a glance, read the full label text on your bottles rather than guessing from icon shape alone. Types and Brands lists how the three label lines differ.
Symbol-to-label matching workflow
Use this checklist on every pickup:
- Pick a bottle and read line two (wine type).
- Open the map and locate the symbol for that type.
- Confirm no other bottle in your batch contradicts that type.
- Pathfind using Cellar Layout corridors.
- At the cabinet, choose brand shelves before first placement locks them.
- Confirm yellow feedback; investigate gray immediately per Sorting Rules.
Repeat until the carry list empties. Refill with the next wine type — not the next nearest bottle on the ground.
Symbols do not show shelf availability
The map tells you where a wine type belongs, not which shelf is empty or which brand owns a shelf. Two keepers heading to the same symbol may need different shelves inside the room based on brand lock-in rules.
Target Hint can highlight destinations after you identify type. Auto Place assists shelf confirmation but cannot override wrong-brand shelves.
Common symbol mistakes
Mistake: Matching brand to symbol. Brand appears on line one; symbols reference line two only.
Mistake: Assuming one symbol per brand. Brands repeat across types; symbols repeat across brands.
Mistake: Ignoring the map when Spot Matches glows. Spot Matches finds nearby compatible bottles in the current room — it does not replace cross-wing map routing.
Mistake: Carrying mixed types because symbols cluster visually. Clustering helps walking; it never allows mixed-type placement on one shelf rule set.
Skills that complement map symbols
| Skill | Map relationship |
|---|---|
| Spot Matches | Finds bottles matching current sorting context nearby |
| Batch Grab | Pulls multiple bottles once type is chosen |
| Target Hint | Points toward map destination after type identification |
| Quick Order | Speeds UI when confirming types at cabinet |
| Sprint | Reduces travel time between symbols |
Spot Matches and Batch Grab remain the essential pair for overall progress — see the Skills hub and How to Prioritize Skills.
Symbols across game modes
Cozy Mode, Speedrun Mode, and Hardcore Mode share identical symbols and map data. Speedrun players memorize symbol locations to skip repeated map opens. Hardcore players still open the map rather than risk wrong-wing drops.

From symbols to completion
All 2,448 bottles eventually map through symbols to cabinets. Late-game efficiency means fewer map opens per bottle because types become muscle memory. Until then, treat symbols as mandatory pre-walk checks.
Track completion milestones on Achievements. Use Tools for external symbol legends if you play on a second monitor. Return to Map hub for sibling pages or Wiki home for the full index.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What do cabinet symbols on the map represent?
**Wine types** from the second bottle label line. They do not encode brand or series number.
Why do I still get gray feedback at the correct symbol?
You likely reached the right wine type cabinet but wrong **brand shelf**. First brand placed locks the shelf — see [Sorting Rules](/bottles/sorting-rules/).
Does Target Hint replace reading the map?
No. Target Hint assists after you identify wine type. You still need symbol literacy for efficient routing.
Are symbols the same in all three modes?
Yes. Map symbols and layout are identical in Cozy, Speedrun, and Hardcore modes.
